Sol Campbell has branded the Football Association institutionally racist and claimed that he would have been England captain for 10 years if he had been white.
The former Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth defender, who won 73 caps with England, makes the claim in his autobiography, which is published later this month.
In it, he says he was overlooked for the captaincy because of the colour of his skin.
Campbell said: 'I believe that if I was white I would have been England captain for 10 years.
'I don't think it [the situation] will change because they don't want it. It's all right to have a black or mixed race captain of the Under 18s or Under 21s but not for the full national side.
'There is a ceiling and, although no one has ever said it, I believe it's made of glass.
'Michael Owen was made captain ahead of me and I thought, "What's going on here?" I think the FA didn't want me to have a voice.
'Owen was a fantastic forward but nowhere near being a captain. I've asked myself many times why I wasn't [named captain]. I keep coming up with the same answer. It was the colour of my skin.'

Sad: Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker dies
Reports from sources in the Ondo State house of Assembly says the Speaker of the house, Samuel Adesina Ajayi has passed away.
It was gathered that Ajayi reportedly died last night at an undisclosed hospital in Lagos.
The speaker’s absence from the state parliament became a source of worry for over three months.
Sahara Reporters say:
The speaker has been battling with cancer for several months before his death.
SaharaReporters could not immediately confirm Mr. Adesina’s age, as the Ondo State governor’s spokesperson Eni Akinsola said he could not confirm the death of the speaker.
The late Adesina represents Odigbo constituency ii in the state house. He is also a member of the Labour Party.
Gunmen Abduct President Jonathan’s 'Father' In Bayelsa
These are not the best of times for President Goodluck Jonathan as
heavily-armed gunmen have abducted his adopted father, Chief Inengite
Nitabai, in their home village of Otuoke, in the Ogbia Local Government
Area of Bayelsa State.
There are two sides to the story that led to his kidnap but sources on
ground said Chief Inengite was trying to re-possess a piece of land he
had already sold to somebody several years ago, when the gunmen stormed
the area and snatched him. The 10-man gang of kidnappers were said to
have appeared from no where...
65yrs old Chief Inengite is still with thee kidnappers as at the time of reporting. A security source said that the vehicle was later recovered at the Onuegbum community waterfront where it had been abandoned.
Although the motive of the kidnappers has not been ascertained, sources
say it be connected to the land. The incident has led to heavy security
presence in the area, which is host to the Federal University, Otuoke.
Confirming the incident, Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said one person had been arrested. "Investigation is in progress to unmask the kidnappers and rescue the victim," he said.

Hennessey's Venom GT becomes the world's fastest car after reaching a top speed of 270mph
A supercar has become the world's fastest production model after reaching a top speed of 270mph.
American firm Hennessey has claimed for some time that its Venom GT is the fastest thing on four wheels.
But until now the firm hadn't been able to attempt beating the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport's record-breaking 269mph because it was on VW's private test track.

However, it emerged today that the Texan manufacturer was given access to Nasa's space shuttle landing runway in Florida for a one-off blitz in the 1,200bhp machine.
The Venom GT managed to reach 270.49mph compared to the average top speed of 200mph in a Formula 1 car.
The speed makes it slightly quicker than the 269.86mph achieved by Bugatti in 2010.
