Miss Colombia Paulina Vega, a relative pageant newcomer, has been crowned Miss Universe, beating out first runner-up Miss USA Nia Sanchez and contestants from more than 80 other countries at Sunday's pageant in Miami.

Vega, a 22-year-old student of business administration from Barranquilla, Colombia, said she would wear the crown with "pride and excitement" as she heard the news that fans in Colombia had taken to the streets to celebrate.Although she was far from home, Vega said she still felt the support from local Latinos.

APC to host Google Hangout session with Nigerian youth

Ahead of the upcoming presidential polls next month, the opposition party APC is hosting a Google Hangouts session, with VP candidate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola for the youth. The goal will be to “Discuss the APC’s plan to get Nigeria working again”. It will provide an avenue for public debate with a focus on APC’s promise to create millions of jobs every year if elected into power, and also how they hope to achieve it. The Hangout will hold January 27t, 2015.

#TeamUI: Prof. Gbemisola Oke Becomes Second Female Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University Of Ibadan

Prof. Gbemisola Oke, a professor of Periodontology and Community Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (UI), has been elected the 7th Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the institution.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Olatunji Oladejo, the Director of Public Communication of the institution, made available to newsmen on Sunday in Lagos.

According to the statement, the new deputy vice-chancellor replaced Prof. Idowu Olayinka, whose tenure ended on Dec. 16, 2014.

It stated that Oke, who before the appointment was Director, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation of the institution, had become the second female to occupy the position.

The statement added that the first female to occupy the post was Emeritus Prof. Abiola Odejide of the Department of Communication and Language Arts, who served from Nov. 8, 2004 to Nov.7, 2006.

It noted that the new DVC (Academic) graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in 1981 and bagged a Master of Public Health (MPH) from University of California, Los Angeles in 1985.

Prof. Oke, the statement added, capped it up with a Ph.D degree in Community Medicine/ Epidemiology from UI.

Nigeria midfielder Onazi dedicates Serie A goal to bomb Blast victims

The Lazio midfielder has sent a condolence message to those affected in the early morning explosions that rocked commuters traveling to Abuja

Nigeria midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has dedicated his goal in Sunday's 4-2 loss to Napoli to the victims of the explosions in the country's capital Abuja on Monday.

The blasts occurred at a bus station in Nyanya, on the outskirts of the federal capital, killing more than 70 people.

Onazi, a social media savvy player, dedicated his first ever Serie A goal for Lazio to the victims of the terror attack.

“I dedicate my goal to the victims of the explosion, that happened this morning,” Onazi wrote on his Twitter account.

“I hope by the grace of God the families have the strength needed to manage everything,” the Lazio midfielder concluded.

Many of the victims of the explosion were headed to work early in Abuja when the incident occured.

Senate Passes N4.69trn 2014 Budget

The Senate today, Wednesday, 9^th of April, 2014 passed N4.69 trillion as budget for the 2014 fiscal year, nearly four months after it was presented by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on behalf of the President. The executive had proposed N4.642 trillion, but the amount was jerked up with an additional N53 billion, by the upper chamber.

27% of the budget sum, which is N1.1 trillion is for capital expenditure, while the remaining 73% goes to running the government – N2.454 trillion for recurrent expenditure, N408.6 billion for statutory transfers, and another N712 billion is for debt service.

NDLEA Nabs Mother with Cocaine In Her Private Part In Lagos

The plan by the food vendor who inserted 685 grammes of cocaine in her private part, to beat operatives of the NDLEA at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, has been foiled, as she was arrested.
Chinelo Okorom Lynnette, 36, was arrested during inward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Nigeria.

NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said: ”The suspect tested positive for drug ingestion and vaginal insertion. She, however, expelled a total of 685 grammes of substance that tested positive for cocaine while under observation at the airport.”

FC Barcelona banned from signing players for the next two transfer windows

FIFA has announced that Barcelona will not be able to sign players during the next two transfer windows, after they failed to comply to rules governing transfer of youths.

The world football governing body carried out an investigation last year and found the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Catalan club guilty of violating several rules that govern international transfers and registering foreign players.
